FarmMind
Everyone who owns or manages land knows how important a good map is. Mapping your fields nails down boundaries, tracks true acres, and keeps all field specific information in one place. On FarmMind, Mapping is the entry point for the whole platform. Draw or import a field and it becomes the hub: every scouting note, text, photos, quick audio, sticks to that boundary; dashboards tell the season’s story and financial breakdown for that field; AI Chat answers in context, “Look at my notes and sketch a management plan”; Species ID files weed and insect photos to the right place; and the Data Visualizer turns your tables into field level charts and maps. Importantly, anything you can do through our Mapping on your computer, you can also do on your smartphone or tablet through our app on the App Store and Google Play Store.
To draw a field, open Map Controls and hit Draw Field. On desktop, click to place down nodes or drag and drop to place them on phone or tablet, especially useful with a stylus. If you miss a point, Undo Last Point gets rid of it. The Save buttons lights up after placing three points. Tap Save or press Enter to save immediately, or press Esc to cancel the last point or exit drawing mode. To tidy up a border later, choose Edit Field Shape and select the field and to drag vertices without redrawing.
If you already have fields mapped in another program, you can export them as GeoJSON or shapefiles. Click on either the Import Shapefiles or Import GeoJSON buttons to drag your files in for import. Not only will the field boundaries be imported, but if there are any field/crop properties coming from your software, they will be automatically converted into Tags and applied to your fields. This is supported for the majority of softwares, but if it does not work for your case please use the Contact Us page so that we can work with you.
After completing the drawing of a field, you are led through a series of dialog boxes to document Field Info such as the Group and crop, the Tags, and Permissions. Organize fields the way that is best for you. Groups are intended to be geographic categorizations such as farms, blocks, tracts, leases, or parishes/counties. On the map, all fields of the same group are surrounded by a dotted red border. Tags personalize each field with markers like crop, owner, season, growth stage, irrigation method, and more. Use the default Tags out of the box, or create your own Tags and Tag Types with custom colors. Tag Types drive the color layout of the map, filters, and can be displays as field overlays. You can apply them one by one or in bulk using Select Mode - discussed more further down. Permissions allow other users on the FarmMind platform to view your created fields on their map. Maps which have been shared with you will have a green border.
Once you have created a field you can click on it to access the menu above. Here you can view and edit your Field Info, Tags, create and view Field Notes, and more.
There are several tools in GIS to help minimize clicks and scrolls. The lower right buttons are your shortcuts. Zoom Mode lets you drag a rectangle and jump straight there. A trash icon appears if you want to cancel mid drag. It turns itself off once you land. This is useful for controlled zooming without having to continuously scroll. Home Bases save the places you look at most on the map. Tap Create New, zoom or pan to the desired location on the map, click Save, and name that Home Base. This is an extremely useful tool that can be customized to quickly hop around the map to your most commonly viewed areas with just a click. Current Location centers the map on your current position - extremely useful when out in the field.
These controls change what you see on the map:
Satellite Background toggles between a white background and satellite imagery when you need to see rows, water, or land markers on the ground.
Transparent Markers switch field markers between solid white, for better visibility of overlays, and transparent, for better visibility of the fields themselves.
Color By picks a Tag Type like crop stage, owner, priority, or your own custon Tag Type and colors the fields. All fields are colored by their Tags of that Tag Type. If a field does not have a Tag of that type, it appears gray.
Filter Fields gives you high level of control over which fields you see. You can do this by Group, crop, and/or Tags. There is an AND - OR toggle in the Tags section as well as SHOW - HIDE toggles in each section to invert the selections in each section.
Edit Overlays decides what text prints on the fields: name, acreage, and any Tag Types you care about. You can control text size with the dropdown menu in the top right corner.
Show Field Notes reveals markers on the map for Field Notes that have been assigned a location. Tap on Field Note markers for a preview of that note. You can also use the filtering button to the right of Show Field Notes to control which Field Notes are displayed.
Select Mode lets you take actions on fields in bulk. To go into Select Mode, just flip on the toggle, and flip it off to exit this mode. Once in Select Mode, click fields one by one or drag a rectangle to grab a block. Use the Touch or Surround toggle to control whether a field needs to be surrounded by, or just touched by, the rectangle to be selected. You can also use Filter Fields and the Select All Filtered button to select fields which are showing on the map. All of these actions can be chained together for flexibility. Edit Info and Group changes specific field information, such as the Group, crop, and planting date. Manage Tags adds, changes, and removes Tags across all selected fields, and lets you stage several changes and apply them all at once. Manage Permissions controls who can see or edit those fields. View Field Notes displays notes for all fields. Add Field Note drops a new note, text, photo, audio, across the selected fields for bulk documentation. Add Costs/Yield lets you add costs and yield for a group of fields for quick calculations and is then saved to your dashboards in the financial sections. Chat About These Fields bring you to the Chat where you talk with the AI about those fields. Delete Fields in red removes fields.
Tag & Group Manager is where you manage your created Tags and Groups. In the Tags section you can create, edit, or delete Tags, as well as see the acreage across all Tags. In the Groups tab you can delete and edit your Groups, as well as see the total acreage in each Group.
The Master Field List is your place to see all your fields. Sort by Group then crop or crop then Group. You can see the total acreage and field count of each Group or crop. From this dialog you can also find a field of interest and tap the blue pin icon to snap right to that field on the map.
At the bottom left of the map tap the Settings button to open the Map Settings dialog. From here, you can set defaults for the Visual Tools so that when you open the map, it will look exactly how you want by default. You can set if you want the satellite background, transparent markers, Field Notes button, and Field Note markers on or off by default. Also set the default color scheme, overlays, and Home Base. The default Home Base will ensure your map always starts up on that Home Base.
Export Mode is your way to capture and share maps as PDFs. Select Export Map in the bottom left corner of the map below Settings, then drag a square over the fields you want to export to open the exporting window. All of your selected visual presets from the Mapping page carry over and can be further changed. There are also a few new tools like:
Highlight Tool: click fields to highlight them in an orange border; the exported PDF displays the acreage of the highlighted fields.
Note Tool: drop text annotations on the map.
Draw Tool: freehand markups to be captured on the map.
Field Removal Tool: to remove fields from your map export.
To create the export, select Preview PDF at the bottom left. This will bring up a preview of the exported map and open the Export Options. Select the Apply Template button to create and select templates for the Export Options allowing for easy and fast map creation for your workflow. You can also scroll up to access the other tools and Display Options to make further markups to your preview. You can move the map around like normal to put in the frame on your preview exactly how you want. Once done, select the Export PDF button to create your PDF.
FarmMind Mapping anchors you to the entire platform. It has been designed to allow users to have ultimate control and customizability over how to maneuver around the map and organize information, as well as easy to use tools for sharing custom maps for collaboration.
